The Saatchi Gallery will celebrate its 30th anniversary with an all-women exhibition entitled Champagne Life. Opening on the 13th January 2016, this show marks the Gallery’s first time ever in featuring works by women artists only.

The exhibition is named after the homonymous artwork by the American artist Julia Wachtel, one of the 14 emerging women artists brought together for this event. Champagne Life features the work of Mequitta Ahuja, Alice Anderson, Marie Angeletti, Jelena Bulajic, Julia Dault, Mia Feuer, Sigrid Holmwood, Virgile Ittah, Seung Ah Paik, Maha Malluh, Suzanne McClelland, Stephanie Quayle, Sohelia Sokhanvari and Julia Wachtel.

The artists have different origins as well as different backgrounds, coming from a variety of countries such as USA, UK, France, Serbia, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Canada and Australia, therefore bringing to the exhibition a unique and multifaceted artistic experience focused on the topic of what it means to be a female artist working nowadays.

The irony of the perceived glamour of the art world lies subtly throughout the artworks in the contrast of the socially institutionalised symbolisation of the champagne as indicator of high living and prestige, opposed to the loneliness of the long, cold hours spent by artists in the studio, away from reality and social life.

The Saatchi Gallery, which in the last 5 years presented 15 of the 20 most visited museum exhibitions in London, has always been an active supporter of women artists, supporting them in their early career and providing them the perfect spotlight to present their works. Many of these artists have then grown to become central figures in contemporary art, such as Paula Rego, Rachel Whiteread, Cecily Brown and Jenny Saville.
