Red Pocket is a recently-launched Chinese restaurant in the stylish Hotel Verta, located right on the Thames in Battersea, just opposite the Chelsea and Kensington area. The elegant venue is a hidden gem compared to many of London’s more recognised names, but appears to be very capable of soon establishing itself as a genuine favourite.

Decorated with charming Chinese paintings and ornaments, the restaurant manages to emit a welcoming atmosphere, despite being comprised of a large dining area and a separate bar. The quaint, engaging seating arrangements seem to create a very personal and relaxing environment. Guests are also provided with an interactive view of the busy open kitchen, where manager Weng Kong Wong (formerly of Hakkasan) oversees the preparation and delivery of the food.

The terrace area allows guests to enjoy the serenity of the Thames and a view of Chelsea Harbour whilst they eat, with the unique possibility of a surprise landing on the famous London Heliport, which sits right next door.

The impressive menu leaves you spoiled for choice with a comprehensive selection of expertly-crafted Asian specialities.

As a starter, the Salt and Pepper Squid is a wonderful option, and the Atlantic King Crab Salad, infused with rich avocado and garnished with lotus is absolutely sensational and certainly a highlight.

Main courses range from a beautifully grilled Chilean Seabass, complemented with a honey sauce, to Braised Duck with Chinese herbs which is both extremely delicious and filling. A range of rice and noodles prepared in traditional styles is available, and the Crispy Dried Scallops Fried Rice, with egg white and seafood is the premier choice here.

There is a wealth of variations of Dim Sum, including the steamed Xiao Long Bao, which translates to ‘in seven flavours’. Additionally, vegetarian dishes are very well represented, creating a comprehensive menu that should please everybody.

Classic desserts with an Asian twist follow. A tantalising chocolate mousse, dressed with assorted fruits and a guilt-ridden sauce is a wonderful way to end your indulgence for the evening. A Kiwi Cheesecake is also available, which is an interesting and original alternative.

Red Pocket has an extensive wine menu, along with authentic Chinese lager, and a long list of innovative Asian-themed cocktails adaptable to both alcoholic and non-alcoholic tastes.

The presentation of the food is immaculate, and the service itself is excellent, efficient and attentive. Great precision and care is evidently taken in every aspect of the preparation process. Furthermore, the restaurant demonstrates genuine integrity and is dedicated to providing an enjoyable dining experience for all their guests, which they seem to comfortably achieve.
