Curzon street sees the opening of Marani, a traditional, family-run Georgian restaurant nestled in the heart of Mayfair.
Georgia, a country that prides itself on hospitality and feasting, combining Eastern and Western culinary culture. Marani, brings such classics like Khinkali dumplings, Khachapuri cheese bread and spiced broths served alongside slow-cooked stews served in cast iron pots, skewered meats prepared on the mangal grill and a wide variety of vegetarian dishes. Bread will also be baked fresh daily in the restaurant’s clay oven. Yet Marani hoped to accomplish a lighter touch, and although maintaining these traditional flavours, respected Georgian chef Tekuna Gachechiladze has created a menu that he hopes will also offer modern interpretations of traditional “supra” dishes.
With a name that literally translates to wine cellar, Marani will showcase the largest selection of Georgian wines this side of the Caucasus Mountains. Affirming Georgia’s wine heritage that dates back 8,000 years, longer than any other country in the world, these wines have been made using the traditional Qveri method – fermented and aged in a
ceramic ‘clay jar’ that is buried in the ground. For those seeking something a little stronger, Marani will also serve a selection of infused Chacha, Georgia’s national spirit, made with grape pomace and often flavoured with honey and kiwi, as well as a strong selection of brandy.
Designed by Georgian artist Tamara Kvesitadze, the restaurant mirrors a traditional Georgian home and dramatic hand-painted murals can be seen in this rustic dining space. Additionally there is a semi-private dining space for eight people, complete with wooden cabinets, ornaments lining the mantle piece and lampshades that will transport you to a traditional dining room in rural Georgia. Tucked behind a draping velvet curtain, the private dining room perfectly exemplifies Tamara’s Georgian handiwork where two traditional male and female collared dresses hang on the encrusted and carved walls. Upstairs also houses the late-night Cha Cha bar that will attract guests post-dinner.
